A guide for your career plans in Fashion

A career in fashion could take you in any of a number of exciting directions. One thing fashion careers share, aside from being a rewarding outlet for your creative talents, is their beginning: fashion school.

Study fashion and youíll be rewarded with a wealth of practical information thatíll give you the knowledge, the credentials and the all-important portfolio that youíll need to get that crucial entry-level position in the fashion industry.

Choosing the Right Course
The fashion industry is competitive, particularly so in fashion design, and success depends as much upon hard work and dedication as on natural talent. To make the most of your commitment and enthusiasm for fashion, itís important to choose the right course.

General fashion courses provide a grounding in the principles of fashion; thereafter, you can pursue specialized study or training. Some schools offer a broad program and expect you to specialize on your own once you enter the field. Others are entirely focused on a certain part of the industry Ė fashion design or fashion merchandising, for example. You can get a real head start by specializing from the outset if you already know which part of the fashion industry you want to work in.

Careers in Fashion
Fashion careers are essentially of two types Ė those in fashion design and those in the sales and marketing side of the industry. The skills necessary for fashion design and fashion merchandising are quite different, although to master one requires a good understanding of the other.

Both sides of the fashion industry are competitive and require creative talent and usually at least a bachelorís degree, so you should expect to work hard to get ahead. The rewards are excellent. Not only is the work varied and interesting with plenty of opportunity for self-employment, you can expect good financial rewards too.
